Founded in 1908, the National Taiwan Museum is the oldest museum in Taiwan. Spanning Taipei’s historic city center, the museum comprises four distinct branches: the Main Building, the Natural History Branch, the Nanmen Branch, and the Railway Department Park. Together, they showcase Taiwan’s rich cultural heritage through exhibitions on natural history, humanities, industrial development, and railway history.
The Main Building, located in 228 Peace Memorial Park, was originally the Taiwan Governor Museum during the Japanese colonial period and is now designated as a National Historic Site. Its collections provide an excellent introduction to Taiwan’s natural and cultural history. Across the street, the Natural History Branch, formerly the Taipei Branch of the Kangyo Bank, preserves its original bank vault while featuring exhibitions on biological evolution, global environmental change, Taiwan’s endemic species, and impressive dinosaur fossils, making it a favorite destination for visitors of all ages.
The Nanmen Branch, formerly the Nanmen Factory of the Taiwan Governor-General Monopoly Bureau, presents the history of Taiwan’s camphor industry and monopoly system through its historic architecture and permanent exhibitions. Meanwhile, the Railway Department Park preserves significant railway heritage from the Qing Dynasty through the post-war era, tracing the development of Taiwan’s railways and modernization. Together, the four museum sites blend natural conservation, cultural heritage preservation, and environmental education, offering visitors an ideal gateway to explore Taiwan’s history, culture, and the stories behind the city.
