Hercules Pillar

People in Ancient Greece thought the Mediterranean Sea was the edge of the world. It’s said that Hercules – son of Zeus – erected a massive pillar at the mouth of the Strait of Gibraltar. The words “NON PLVS VLTRA” were etched on the pillar to warn people from venturing beyond that point. It wasn’t until the European Age of Discovery that people dared to venture beyond the strait. Those daring adventurers found a vast world beyond the grand ocean. Holy Roman Emperor Charles V adopted PLVS VLTRA as a motto to encourage his people to continue their journeys of discovery.

Those words are etched above the globe that sits in the first-floor lobby. It embodies what Charles V decreed: to never stop discovering.
